Convo #1
Join us for Jimi Calhoun weekend!
Some time ago, Rev. Jimi Calhoun played bass on his first world-changing hit song, The Swim. Yes, the song even you know how to dance to. He was 15 years old at the time and went on to become a formative influencer in the originations of Funk, West Coast Rock, and New Orleans Funk, performing on classic albums with Sly Stone, Dr. John, Funkadelic, Rare Earth, The Rolling Stones, Buddy Miles, Creation, and many, many more into the early 1980s. Then he switched to ministry.
Rhythm and Grace
Since becoming a full time pastor, Rev. Calhoun and his wife have helped start and grow congregations in California, Florida, Maryland, Central America, and Texas. He's also found time to publish five books. His works call for true inclusiveness: loving people as they are, "dancing across divisions by means of a choreography of altruism."
Meaningful Dialogue
Rev. Calhoun's newest book, Border Dance: a study in contrasts and conflict and how to resolve them, is perfectly suited for G.I.F.T. Fest. We're celebrating Mr. Calhoun's numerous contributions to modern culture with three events around the new book and his outstanding musical legacy.
March 15, 16 & 17!
Friday, Saturday, Sunday: Join us at Love Wheel Records, Black Pearl Books, and Episcopal Church of the Resurrection, in central-north Austin (the "Crestview" area) for three special events. We'll also have a special playlist highlighting some of Jimi's history as a bass player, plus donated beverages and food. RSVP below or come as you are!
